A Happiness Workout For You
Did I catch you out for a walk? Maybe sweating to the oldies on a treadmill?
Fantastic! That means you’re doing the work to stay strong, flexible, and full of life. You’re telling that old person knocking at your door, “Not today!”
Well done. 💪🏻
But here’s a question. What about your well-being? Because your happiness could use a workout, too.
Wait… happiness? Yes! You can practice your way to happiness, and it only takes 15 minutes a day. No treadmill, no gym bag, no post-workout shower required.
Are you worth it? You know you are. So here’s your five-step happiness workout designed to boost your mood, sharpen your mind, and fill your tank with joy. Time to be a happiness doer, my friend.
1. Express Gratitude
Before your feet hit the floor, pause. Name one thing you’re grateful for, especially something you usually take for granted.
I’m alive.
I’m breathing.
I can stand up.
Simple truths that remind us how lucky we are. Gratitude has been shown to help people live longer, and more importantly, live better.
2. Hug Someone
Find someone who matters. Wrap them up in a long, generous hug. Aim for 21 seconds, that’s when oxytocin kicks in for both of you. It’s the “love hormone,” the same one released when we hold hands, snuggle, or kiss.
Bonus: pets count too. Hugs from fur-babies totally qualify. 🐾
3. Relive a Moment of Joy
When your day gets heavy, take 90 seconds. Close your door, silence your phone, close your eyes, and relive a joyful memory. Smell the aromas. Feel the texture, hear the melodies. Soak it all in. These Life Experience Points you invested in are still paying dividends. Let them lift you.
4. Smile
Be the first to smile. Early and often. Smiles, even fake ones, trigger dopamine and serotonin, two of your brain’s natural feel-good chemicals. A smile is a gift that says, “I see you.” And it just might change someone’s whole day.
5. Tell Me Something Good
Right before bed, recall one good thing from your day. Big or small, your favorite song played, your kid texted “have a great day,” or maybe you finally got outside at lunch.
Write them down. By the end of the week, you’ll have a list of 7 “somethings good” to reflect on. That’s how you silence your negativity bias and end your day on a high note.
And there you have it. Five simple reps for a stronger, happier you.
No gym membership required. Just 15 minutes of Powerful Fun, every day. Ready to get your happiness reps in? Let’s go.
Cue the Rocky theme… and don’t forget to hug the dog. 🐶🎶🥊
